Xavier Hutchinson 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Two-time First Team All-Big-12 (2021)
  • Lead the Big 12 in receptions (83) in 2021

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread / vertical stretch offense
  • 2022 projected role: No. 1 receiver

Pros: There are many aspects of Xavier Hutchinson’s game to like. Hutchinson has a versatile release package that he uses to beat defensive backs quickly at the line of scrimmage. As a route-runner, Hutchinson is very nuanced. He understands how to stem defenders and set them up so they lose leverage on his routes. He also has the fluidity in his hips to sink his hips and flip them to quickly uncover at the top of routes. Hutchinson also shows to have great ball-tracking ability in the air. He is able to make quick adjustments to the ball and contour his body to make acrobatic catches.

Cons: There aren’t many downsides to Xavier Hutchinson’s game, just a couple of things I feel that he can improve on. As a run blocker, Hutchinson flashes dominance but he can be inconsistent at times. Also, while Hutchinson is great at making those acrobatic catches, there are a couple of less difficult passes that he lets slip through his hands. Those drops seem to be centered more around his focus than his natural ability to catch the ball. Improving on these two elements of his game can make Hutchinson a No. 1 receiver for many NFL teams.
