Prospect Summary
Justin McGriff 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Background:
- Two-sport high school athlete (football and basketball)
- Transferred from Nebraska to ASA College to Utah State
- Three-star recruit
System:
- Scheme tendencies: Fast-paced spread option offense
- 2022 projected role: Starting outside receiver
Pros: What I was initially drawn to with Justin McGriff were his length and incredible catch radius. For a bigger, angular receiver, McGriff moved with more fluidity than expected. His knowledge of pre-snap leverage and how to manipulate CBs was impressive. McGriff will use his frame to lean on and box out defensive backs like a power forward. He is a willing blocker that uses his length to lockout CBs on the perimeter. When engaged, McGriff can drive his opponent out of position to make a play. His stride is long—he eats up grass once it is open. As a result, he can pull away from cornerbacks after he stacks them.
Cons: Justin McGriff is a long, leggy mover that can start slow at the line of scrimmage. His impressive physical profile doesn’t match his seasonal production. He should flash more dominance. His supreme height and length create functional issues when sinking in and out of his breaks. He is high-hipped, limiting his ability to consistently stop on a dime. Despite his physical gifts, he has not shown the skill set to be a RAC threat at the next level.
