Joshua Cephus 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Uncle, Marvin Cephus, played in the NFL
  • Honorable Mention All-C-USA (2020, 2021)

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread
  • 2022 projected role: Backup receiver with ability to play inside and outside

Pros: Joshua Cephus is a big, physical receiver who has very good versatility. He predominantly aligns in the slot but will be moved outside in two-receiver sets. He has above-average push off the line and is able to get vertical in a hurry. He runs good routes, showing creativity and good fluidity at the top of the break. He is outstanding at the catch point, showing an ability to win 50/50 situations and track the ball. He has made plenty of acrobatic and highlight-reel catches over his career. He is good after the catch as he runs with power and quickness and can make defenders miss in the open field.

Cons: Joshua Cephus lacks the ability to separate cleanly and corners can stay in his hip pocket and ride him throughout the route. He has just above-average speed and doesn’t scare you when he presses on vertical routes. He is a strong receiver who must rely on his ability to win in contested situations as his ability to separate just isn’t there.
