Zay Flowers 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • One of 14 children
  • All-ACC first-team, the second BC receiver to make the list

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Tempo-based (New OC)
  • 2022 projected role: Starting WR

Pros: Zay Flowers is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands. He’s a finesse receiver that excels with speed and explosion out of his breaks. He is capable of stretching a defense vertically and horizontally. He can handle the role of a chain mover with manufactured touches. He has good ball skills to track and secure the football downfield and is a big-play threat from anywhere on the field. He has the potential to become a reliable YAC threat in space. Flowers is very capable of separating with his route-running.

Cons: As a really small receiver, Zay Flowers’ weight and frame are a concern. He lacks length for a trusted catch radius. Aligns mostly outside, but his splits are reduced closer to the line. As a result, he projects to be a slot-only receiver in the NFL. Despite being an effective route-runner, he can stand to become more nuanced. His routes lack tempo and he relies on speed and athleticism. He struggles against longer physical press corners and needs to improve his release package.
