Dontay Demus Jr. 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Three-time All-Big-Ten honorable mention (2019, 2020. 2021)
  • Three-year starter
  • Recovering from an ACL injury from the 2021 season

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Vertical offense
  • 2022 projected role: Prototype X receiver, can also play the big slot role in the red zone

Pros: Dontay Demus is a big-bodied receiver that has the frame to fit the traditional X receiver role. In press coverage, Demus has good strength to power through press and immediately get into his route. In off coverage, Demus has the speed to condense a defender’s cushion quickly and can force them to bail out or he can run right past them. With the ball in the air, Demus does a good job attacking the ball at its highest point and securing the pass. Demus can be utilized as a true red-zone target on back-pylon fade routes or jump balls because he can win 50/50 balls consistently.

Cons: On par with many big-bodied receivers, Dontay Demus can struggle some with running precise routes. Demus is a high-waisted guy who may struggle to quickly make cuts. At the top of routes, Demus tends to round off some in-breaking routes. Also, Demus can become a more effective blocker in the run game. There are many instances where he doesn’t effectively block his defender. Demus has the potential, it is just a matter of technique and consistently putting in the effort.
