Prospect Summary

Malachi Carter 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Consensus three-star prospect
  • A four-year letter-winner in track and field.
  • Gwinnett County-record 1,348 yards on 72 receptions

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread
  • 2022 projected role: Starting X receiver

Pros: Malachi Carter has sufficient speed to win the occasional deep ball. He is a smooth route-runner that alters the tempo and speed of his routes. Carter’s frame offers a good catch radius with length to take advantage across the middle of the field. He projects better as a slot receiver that can maximize a two-way release. His size and length can provide issues for smaller nickel corners. As a route-runner, Carter understands how to locate and manipulate defenders’ blindspots in man coverage. Resetting the leverage point against press alignment will be key for his vertical success. He offers run-after-catch potential with his frame and play strength.

Cons: Malachi Carter is not an explosive receiver to be a consistent perimeter vertical threat. If he does not win the leverage battle early, he will be dependent on contested catches downfield. He needs to continue to expand his release package. He does not identify soft spots in zone coverage to settle into. We’re awaiting a potential breakout campaign for Carter within this new spread offense for the Yellow Jackets.
