Donavon Greene 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Consensus four-star receiver
  • Lettered in football, basketball, and track & field
  • A part of HS 4×200 meter

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Deep mesh RPO/Spread
  • 2022 projected role: Starting outside receiver

Pros: Donavon Greene is an all-around athlete. There is a lot of hype and excitement surrounding this young man—for good reason. He packs the strength to fight through contact in his stem and after the catch. Greene’s sprinter background is easy to see once he shifts gears. He has easy acceleration and burst that’s useful after the catch. He has good football intelligence to read pre-snap leverage, dictating the approach into his stem. Greene puts DBs in conflict with his dangerous long speed. If unimpeded, he can take the top off a defense quickly. “If he’s even, he’s leaving” perfectly depicts his vertical prowess (19.8 career ypc). He’s a threat to vertically detach from coverage with the ball in the air and attack at its highest point. Crossers are run with little to no wasted motion, optimizing his ability to separate from coverage.

Cons: Donavon Greene missed the entire 2021 season with a torn ACL. It will be interesting to see if his explosiveness and speed are back in full force. Greene struggled with consistency catching the football in 2020—he was charged with seven drops. I would categorize them as concentration drops and allowing the ball into his frame on in-breaking routes, slants, digs, etc. He can improve on the overall selling of his routes. Adding subtle nuances will help sell his route and improve separation. He runs what is designed but can expand his route tree in general.
