Prospect Summary

Matthew Jones 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Played both offensive and defensive line in high school
  • Four-star recruit from Brooklyn, New York

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Zone rushing scheme, spread passing offense
  • 2022 projected role: Starting guard

Pros: Matthew Jones is a powerful blocker that creates significant movement in the run game. He fires off the ball with intent and ideal temperament, providing the nasty demeanor desired from offensive linemen. Jones creates a strong initial jolt with his powerful hands and accelerates his feet to widen lanes. Jones features a stout anchor in pass protection to absorb power. Opponents won’t find success trying to play through Jones. I like Jones’ hand usage and how he’s able to compete for his hand fits to control reps. He flashes the ability to work his hands independently and vary his strikes. While he is fairly inexperienced, Jones has played all three interior spots for Ohio State.

Cons: Matthew Jones needs to prove his ability with more consistency across a larger sample size. He has only started five games in his career for the Buckeyes but has been a regular part of the unusual offensive line rotation that Ohio State has utilized. The coaching staff has stated there are times when he looks like a first-rounder but he lacks consistency. Jones doesn’t appear to be the most fleet of foot and his lateral movement skills don’t impress. He does have some leaner tendencies and I would like to see him play with better bend and more of a willingness to sit on his hips. The 2022 season will be a defining one as he’s expected to be a full-time starter.
