Jarrett Patterson 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background: 

• Originally recruited as an offensive tackle prospect at the high school level

• Only returning starter from 2020 Irish offensive line
• Missed the end of the 2020 CFB season on account of foot surgery

System: 

• Scheme tendencies: Run-heavy offense, heavy volume between the tackles
• 2022 projected role: Third-year starting center

Pros: Jarrett Patterson has a boxy build that will provide an adequate center of gravity to drop anchor against power rushes. Patterson has proven competent pulling the e-brake against bull rushers inside and not conceding excessive space into the lap of his quarterback. As far as centers go, he’s more of a stout anchor than he is finesse—he looks like he’ll be able to hold his own in one-on-ones against 1T or 0T alignments in even or odd fronts without too much trouble. I’d consider him to be functional in space. He can get outside the tackle box on the screen game with modest agility. He’s a former high-prize OT recruit, but his length looks to keep him inside at the center position with a next-level projection. Patterson illustrated effective awareness up front for the Irish as he as aged as the starting center, showing awareness of delayed blitzes, stunts, and games up front designed to pull blockers out of position. 

Cons: Jarrett Patterson is not overly dynamic in space and can afford to clean up angles when looking to work against linebackers and pick up the critical block that will spring a big gain. Because of his athletic profile, he does not appear to have a great deal of margin for error in space and needs to further develop his understanding of his limits. He’s gotten outreached on a number of occasions and long-armed defenders will be able to offset his hands and force a stalemate in the middle. Patterson has a number of instances of getting tangled in traffic and ending plays on the ground; an easy point of emphasis is keeping his feet and not overextending his base.
