Prospect Summary

Keeanu Benton 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Two-time state qualifier in wrestling; finished as junior with a 48-2 record
  • Voted first team All-State (Associated Press)

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: 3-4 even front
  • 2022 projected role: Starting nose tackle/0-technique

Pros: Keeanu Benton is a traditional 0-tech nose tackle that aligns over the center. He plays with power at the point of attack and can uproot an offensive lineman with proper leverage. He shoots heavy hands to knock back his opponents and create separation. He projects as a two-down lane clogger in the middle of a defense. There are flashes of him collapsing the pocket versus the pass. Benton is capable of contorting his body to fight through blocks and reach other gaps. He has surprisingly loose hips to flip, pivot, and change directions to flow to the ball carrier

Cons: Keeanu Benton’s pad level can be high, surrendering leverage. Even with his pass rush flashes, he needs to become more consistent to remain a viable option on third downs. He does not have an explosive first step. Therefore, his snap anticipation is even more important. His hand combat skills are lacking. Instead of using combinations to deconstruct blocks, he attempts to lean and bully his way into the backfield.
