Fabien Lovett 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  •  Awarded the Bobby Bowden Leadership Award
  •  Team captain

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Mostly even fronts
  • 2022 projected role: Interior defensive lineman

Pros: Fabien Lovett is a high-energy defensive lineman that uses his quick first step to become disruptive. Lovett uses his quick first step to get into gaps quickly and cause havoc in the backfield. At Florida State, they run twists and stunts to get penetration and it appears that’s where Lovett does his best work. He does a good job of identifying holes and penetrating them. Lovett’s motor also helps him because he is in constant pursuit of the quarterback to keep him uneasy in the pocket. On the next level, Lovett will be best served to be a part of an attacking 4-3 scheme that lets their defensive tackles get penetration instead of trying to hold the line of scrimmage.

Cons: Fabien Lovett is a high-effort player who at times just needs a plan. It appears that Lovett is playing without a plan and that can lead to a net-zero effect on a play. For example, on passing plays, Lovett appears to be in scramble mode trying to find a crease instead of just simply picking a gap and committing to winning that gap. Lovett will also become stalled in his pass rush because he seemingly wants to do everything but doesn’t know what exactly is the best route to go. Lovett has the athletic ability to be a productive defensive tackle, but it seems there are mental aspects of the game that he needs to improve on.
