Jalen Redmond 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Five-star recruit
  • Opted out of the 2020 season
  • Turns 24 in March 2023

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: New, but likely a blend of odd and even fronts
  • 2022 projected role:  Starting DT

Pros: Jalen Redmond has all the makings of a breakout performer in 2022. A high-profile recruit, Redmond has flashed his potential where his quickness, power, and motor lead to plenty of disruption. Redmond is explosive off the ball and does well to work into and control gaps. He is powerful throughout his frame to anchor and is rarely moved. I really like his contact balance and how he is able to power through blocks. Redmond complements his athleticism and power with a motor that always runs hot. His hands are busy and he showcases a variety of hand techniques to clear blocks. While Oklahoma has tasked Redmond with plenty of two-gapping duties, he projects best as a penetration-style player. That said, he’s proven able to play any technique along the front and even has some appeal as a 5-technique. Redmond has strong play recognition skills and plays with good control for a player that lives on the opposite side of the line of scrimmage.

Cons: For all the promise Jalen Redmond has shown, his resume could be more complete. He’s never played more than 332 snaps in any season. While Redmond has played a high percentage of snaps in some games, we have yet to see him put an entire season together. While I don’t doubt Redmond’s ability to get to an ideal weight (up or down), he is a bit of a tweener. Redmond would benefit from playing with more consistent leverage and he has some tendencies to play tall.
