Brandon Dorlus 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Consensus three-star recruit in high school

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Multiple front with primarily odd principles
  • 2022 projected role: 3-technique with the ability to kick out to 5 and 7

Pros: Brandon Dorlus is a versatile defender for the Ducks’ multiple-front defensive line. He primarily aligns as a 5-tech in their odd front scheme but also will see time inside at the 3 and the 1. He is best rushing inside where he is able to beat guards and centers as a rusher with his impressive athleticism and flexibility. Dorlus flashes a good first step and quickly wins the edge. He plays with good bend and can contort his body when he reaches the high point of his rush. He has very good length and shows an impressive repertoire of rush moves. He is an interior disrupter who consistently causes havoc due to his blend of explosiveness, length, and bend.

Cons: Brandon Dorlus certainly has intriguing upside as an interior rusher, but there are some concerns in his game. He offers just average power at the point of attack and is not a consistent run defender at this stage of his development. He gets washed by down blocks and struggles to anchor against stronger interior offensive linemen. He is a bit of a tweener right now and doesn’t possess the necessary explosiveness to win off the edge as a traditional end. His best reps come inside but he will need to get much stronger if he will ever become a three-down player in the NFL.
