Brett Johnson 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Pros: To get a grasp of Brett Johnson’s game I had to watch him during 2020 and a little 2019. Johnson has a strong, sturdy frame with good arm length. His length and power can overwhelm single-blocking IOL. His plan of attack solely revolves around overpowering his opponents. He moves around the Bears’ defensive front, aligning at 0, 1, and 3-technique. His strong core and lower body allow him to stay upright/maintain balance against bumping IOL. I like his motor and unwillingness to give up on a play. Johnson has shown the ability to handle double teams and occupy gaps to free up his second-level defenders. He can reset the LOS in the run game with his power and ability to anchor. 

Cons: Brett Johnson has played in 17 games with 13 starts since arriving at Cal as a true freshman in 2019. He missed the entire 2021 season after successful surgery to repair a broken hip sustained in an automobile accident. It will be interesting to see if his game is altered due to the injury since he relies on his base at the POA. Not to mention, he was not an explosive athlete to begin with. This can cause him to be less explosive than before. Johnson has three sacks through 17 games, raising questions about his three-down value at the next level. Maintaining leverage to increase leg drive is contingent on his pad level, which is inconsistent. 2022 will be vital for Johnson to showcase his value to the NFL.
