Trey Dean III 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

Pros: Trey Dean III is a former corner that moved to the safety position. Dean is a big-bodied defensive back that has great height and length. Dean appears to be a good athlete from the way he can play sideline to sideline. Against the run, Dean does a good job of flowing downhill to the line of scrimmage to meet the ball carrier. Dean is a contact seeker that likes to deliver the big blow. In pass coverage, Dean’s experience shows in his ability to play the ball in the air. On deep throws, Dean has the speed to run with receivers down the field and locate the football. 

Cons: Trey Dean III can be grabby at times. Moving inside to safety puts Dean in positions where he has to open his hips and run with receivers, but he seems to still be timing out how much cushion to give receivers. Sometimes he will bail too quickly and give up the underneath and other times he seems to be flat-footed and receivers can give him a move and get behind him. Dean will also get caught looking in the backfield at times and play-action will cause him to run up and leave a vacant spot for the quarterback to throw the ball to.
