DeMarcco Hellams 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Tied for team lead in interceptions (3)

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Can play in both two-high and single-high safety looks
  • 2022 projected role: Starting safety

Pros: DeMarcco Hellams shows to be a versatile safety prospect. For the Crimson Tide defense, they align Hellams in multiple positions from the free safety position to the nickel. Hellams looks most comfortable 10-12 yards off the ball where he sees the play develop in front of him. In pass coverage, specifically in zone, Hellams does a great job of reading the quarterback’s eyes to guide him in the direction of the ball. Hellams is a safety that prefers to deliver the big blow to the receiver to knock the ball loose from their grasp. Hellams has a physical presence about himself and likes to enforce physicality against offensive opponents.

Cons: While DeMarcco Hellams shows well in zone coverage, there are questions about his ability to cover in man. Hellams appears to have slightly above-average athleticism as a safety prospect. This leads to him being a potential mismatch when he is matched against some of the better slot receivers in college football. Routes such as slot fades and speed outs can give Hellams trouble. On the next level, Hellams would be better as a strong safety and put in positions to cover tight ends and running backs. Hellams is a good football player who just appears to have some athletic limitations in coverage.
