Chamarri Conner 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Part of three state championship teams in high school
  • Team captain
  • Earned spot on Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Blend of man and zone coverage, multiple up front
  • 2022 projected role: Starting safety

Pros: Chamarri Conner has been a fixture for the Hokies and he enters the 2022 season with 37 starts and 50 games played already in his career. He is a smart and physical player. Conner is an enthusiastic tackler that takes his responsibilities in run support seriously. Conner loves to key, trigger, fly to the football, and finish. He is never passive when given opportunities to hit and tackle. He has played primarily in the slot for the Hokies’ defense and he has the mentality and toughness needed to play closer to the ball. Conner is mostly a sound processor and demonstrates sound route anticipation skills in zone coverage. He has sufficient ball skills and he’s capable of making plays on the ball in the passing game. He has the play demeanor that translates well to special teams and he has plenty of experience in every phase for the Hokies. He is regarded as a high football character guy with outstanding leadership traits.

Cons: Chamarri Conner has played the overwhelming majority of his snaps in the slot and box for Virginia Tech without many reps as a true outside corner or deep safety so his path to the field in base defense might be challenging. He is a sufficient athlete but lacks top-tier twitch and long speed. He isn’t immune to missing tackles and he needs to be more consistent with keeping his head up and not fall victim to jukes in space. He appears to be stagnant in his development, but the expected move to safety in 2022 could position him well to rise.
