Otis Reese 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Georgia transfer

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Safety/hybrid linebacker
  • 2022 projected role: Starting nickel linebacker

Pros: Otis Reese shows well as a versatile defender who is a reliable run defender. When aligned at depth, Reese does a good job of closing to the ball carrier and making tackles. Reese is a physical defensive back who, when the opportunity presents itself, will deliver the big hit. Even though Reese would be considered a smaller linebacker, he actually plays well in traffic close to the line of scrimmage. Reese is an instinctive player that has the natural ability to evade blockers and make the tackle. Overall, Reese is a versatile defender that shows to be an effective run defender from multiple alignments.

Cons: Otis Reese’s question marks as a player derive from his lack of ability to play man-to-man coverage against receivers. Playing man-to-man, Reese appears to be uncomfortable and will give receivers more than enough cushion so he doesn’t get beat overtop. This allows receivers to run routes in front of him and catch the ball for easy completions. Reese shows better as a zone defender who plays closer to the line of scrimmage. This combination makes Reese a tough player to find a true position for because while he is a high-level run defender, he lacks high-level athleticism to cover high-level receivers, which forces coaches to be specific in his usage.
