Akeem Dent 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Former five-star cornerback in high school

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Primarily zone defender
  • 2022 projected role: Middle-of-the-field player; use his instincts to read and react to the play to be disruptive

Pros: At Florida State, Akeem Dent has found a role in this defense as a middle-of-the-field enforcer. Dent is at his best when he has minimal responsibility and can play downhill to be a disruptor. Dent likes to plant his heels in the ground at depth and read the quarterback’s eyes to lead him to the flow of the play. Dent has an aggressive mentality and likes to deliver physical tackles to the receiver. Looking at Dent’s movement skills, it appears that he has the athleticism to be more versatile on the back end, and that is something that he should add to his game to raise his draft stock.

Cons: Akeem Dent is an aggressive player that likes to deliver big-time hits to receivers. While this is productive, I believe that if Dent can change his approach at times, he can actually come up with the interception. Dent appears to be in a position to come up with an interception but he opts for the big hit instead. This could be a result of him not trusting his athletic ability or just a lack of trust in his ball skills to come up with the interception. As a primary middle-of-the-field defender, Dent has the opportunity to make multiple interceptions if he can change his approach to pass coverage.
