Will McDonald IV 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • 2021 First Team All-Big-12
  • 2021 Big 12 Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Both odd and even fronts
  • 2022 projected role: Starting DE

Pros: Will McDonald IV shows well when he is aligned as a defensive end/edge rusher. From this alignment rushing the passer, McDonald can use his speed to get the edge on offensive linemen in pursuit of the quarterback. At the apex of his rush, McDonald shows the ability to dip and rip under offensive, making it hard to get hands on him. Against the run, McDonald is best when he can slant a specific way and penetrate gaps. McDonald’s technique against the run can use improvement, so it’s best if he can simply go forward penetrating gaps. As of now, McDonald is primarily a pass rusher that is best when he can isolate himself in one-on-one situations against the offensive tackle.

Cons: Will McDonald IV showed to be a productive edge rusher but there seemed to still be plays left on the field. McDonald’s movements can seem rather segmented at times, which prevents him from quickly changing direction. This limits his ability for counter moves that would put offensive linemen in difficult situations. McDonald can also improve his upper-body strength to help play the run. Oftentimes, McDonald gives up ground by simply being displaced by the offensive lineman due to his lack of strength. McDonald will sometimes attempt to spin out of block but it usually just creates a bigger hole in the defense. McDonald has the potential to be a high-level edge rusher in college, there are just a few things within his game that he needs to work on.
