Tyree Wilson 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Texas A&M Transfer
  • Posted 7 sacks in 2021

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Odd / Even
  • 2022 projected role:  Starting DE

Pros: Tyree Wilson is a versatile defensive lineman that appears to have exceptional length and a well-proportioned frame to add or drop weight to play multiple positions along the defensive line. Wilson has the build that allows him to effectively play multiple positions at Texas Tech. In the Tech defense, he will align at the interior defensive line position, which has proven to be effective against the run and at times disruptive. Wilson will fire off the ball and attack the offensive lineman in front of him, often resulting in him either getting backfield penetration or resetting the line of scrimmage. On the edges of the defense, Wilson uses his great arm length to lock out offensive linemen and effectively set the edge.

Cons: To reach his full potential as a player, Tyree Wilson needs to improve his effectiveness rushing the passer. Wilson will at times align in a 4i position where he is aligned on the inside of the tackle. From this position, Wilson appears not to know how to attack the offensive lineman to win in pass-rush situations. Wilson will attempt to rip through a gap, but if that becomes sealed, he doesn’t have a plan afterward to continue to rush and be effective. I believe Wilson could be more effective if he is placed on the edges of the defense and tries to rush from a  true edge alignment where he can use his athleticism and length to try to beat offensive tackles.
