Prospect Summary

Pat Garwo III 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Broke his own school record with 1,922 yards and 29 touchdowns in his senior season
  • Ranked as a top-30 running back recruit

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Pro-style offense
  • 2022 projected role: Starting RB

Pros: Pat Garwo III is a tough, downhill runner. He experienced his breakout season in 2021. If you like squatty strong backs, he fits the bill. He is a thick-framed, one-cut running back that excels in attacking north and south. He reads the flow of the offensive line blocks and defensive leverage. Garwo runs behind his pads with a forward lean. He shows the ability to read and cut after reaching the second and third levels of the defense. He does a good job scanning and working across the formation to protect his quarterback. His feet are planted, hips sunken, and the target is squared before delivering his blow.

Cons: Pat Garwo III lacks the requisite explosiveness to generate big plays—he had only two runs of 30-plus yards and six of 20-plus yards last season. Elusiveness and wiggle are not big pieces of his puzzle. Although he cuts vertically, he lacks the ability to make defenders miss in space. Typically a one-cut back, he is not fluid or twitchy enough to string together multiple moves. The combination of his bruising downhill style and lack of receiving skill set makes him a two-down player. It would be beneficial to him to showcase that he can catch the ball reliably out of the backfield.
