Prospect Summary

Dedrick Parson 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • A two-sport athlete in football and baseball
  • Back-to-back leading rusher at Howard University prior to transfer
  • A two-time all-Public-League selection

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Run and Gun
  • 2022 projected role: Starting RB

Pros: A rather unknown running back in the country, Dedrick Parson has been consistently productive. He hasn’t reached or eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing, but hovering around 600 yards on limited attempts is solid. He’s a compact running back with quick feet who evades quick penetration. Parson is comfortable lining out wide and running routes in this spread offense. His sudden jitterbug running style creates issues for defenders to close on him quickly. From a measurement and skill set standpoint, Parson reminds me a lot of JaMycal Hasty. His ability to read and diagnose defensive leverage impressed me. There is little wasted motion on vertical or lateral cuts at the second level of the defense.

Cons: Dedrick Parson’s smaller stature lessens his effectiveness as a between-the-tackles short-yardage back. I would like to see more consistency holding up in pass protection and blitz pick-up. He has eclipsed 200-plus touches once in his career—which raises the question of whether or not he can carry a heavier workload. His contact balance is sufficient. A change-of-pace role is more than likely in his future.
