Chez Mellusi 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Consensus top-20-ranked running back recruit
  • Finished high school career with 3,905 yards rushing and 50 touchdowns
  • Rushed for 1,819 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns as a high school senior

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Pro-style
  • 2022 projected role: Second-string RB

Pros: The senior running back finally received the touches to showcase his talent. Chez Mellusi is already equipped with NFL height and weight for the position. I believe he’s a scheme-versatile back. Wisconsin ran both gap/power and their share of zone. He understands how to read leverage from both schemes’ access points. Possesses good and quick short cuts as he adjusts to leverage between the tackles. I like the physicality he brings as a ball carrier. Mellusi consistently lowers his shoulder to drive through his opponents. His toughness is real. Nearly half of his rushing production came after contact—he almost reached three yards after contact per attempt. His patience will warm his offensive linemen’s hearts because he does not overrun their blocks until they engage a defender. He has quick feet and cuts in short areas to evade peripheral defenders. He’s a willing blocker in pass pro and does not lack the fortitude to step up and protect his quarterback.

Cons: Chez Mellusi has a solid combination of burst and speed but lacks a true second gear. Though he is patient, he will rush his process and miss opening lanes for access to potential bigger plays. He only had limited action as a receiver last season. He could benefit from increased production to offer more on third downs. There is room for improvement with Mellusi’s contact balance. There are multiple occasions where potential big plays are stifled due to a defender swiping at his legs and thighs, successfully bringing him down. He is coming off a leg injury that cost him the final four games and spring practices.
