Will Rogers 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Three-star recruit
  • He broke Dak Prescott’s single-season records for total yards and touchdowns

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Air Raid
  • 2022 projected role: Starting QB

Pros:  Will Rogers is an accurate pocket-passer that thrives on timing. He delivers very catchable passes in the short-to-intermediate regions of the field. Rogers delivers the ball to his receiver with a quick release. There is some mobility to his game—he can extend plays with his legs. Similar to a point guard in basketball, Rogers runs the Mississippi State offense to the play-caller’s design. With impressive ball placement, he leads his receivers and provides opportunities to run after the catch. Extremely calm and poised in the pocket, he is rarely rattled. His game reminds me of New England Patriots QB Mac Jones.

Cons: Will Rogers lacks the arm talent to consistently push the ball downfield. The deep ball dies on him while in flight. He could benefit from activating his lower body to add torque and velocity to his passes. He is typically on top of his toes while sitting in the pocket. At times, he throws with a backward lean, lessening the velocity and zip he can generate. Improving his eye manipulation to hold safeties and backside defenders can increase throwing windows. His processing is a positive aspect of his game but can become quicker to avoid holding the football and taking sacks.
