Malik Cunningham 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Three-year starter
  • Led the ACC in rushing TDs (2021)

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread  / RPO / QB run
  • 2022 projected role:  Starting QB

Pros: Malik Cunningham is a quarterback whose athleticism instantly jumps off the film. In this Lousiville offense, he runs called QB runs and he does great things with the ball in his hands. He has the speed to run past defenders and is elusive in the open field. Cunningham is a true playmaker running the ball and if he is unaccounted for, he can make the defense pay. As a passer, Cunningham appears to be effective in this offense. Cunningham looks comfortable working the short-to-intermediate portions of the field. Cunningham is a player with a lot of tools that just needs to consistently put it together. If he can, this Louisville offense can become a true powerhouse under Cunningham.

Cons: Malik Cunningham is an electric running quarterback and that’s where he hangs his hat, but there are elements of his passing game that he needs to improve on. At this stage of his progression, Cunningham lacks the desire to throw with anticipation and waits for the receiver to become fully open before throwing the football. There are also inconsistencies in his accuracy. On crossing routes, there are times when Cunningham will put the ball behind the receiver, forcing them to slow their momentum or stop completely. He will also miss a couple of passes high. His accuracy issues appear to be from a lack of a good base in his lower half and throwing from different platforms.
