Steven Jones 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Consensus four-star recruit out of high school
  • Started all 13 games for the Ducks in 2021

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Spread but with power gap principles
  • 2022 projected role: Starting OL

Pros: Steven Jones is a massive lineman who has seen time at right tackle and right guard throughout his career. I believe he bests projects to guard as he is at his best with his edges covered and when he’s allowed to maul downhill. He has very good length and above-average athleticism. In the run game, Jones comes off the ball hard and initiates contact with firm and strong hands. He generates good movement at the point of attack and works to sustain throughout the down. He is an above-average athlete working to the second level, showing good coordination and quickness to get out on pulls and outside runs. In the passing game, Jones flashes good punch timing and power to shock the rusher and disrupt his plan. He has a firm anchor and uses good hands to win inside position to control and steer. He is able to recover after losing initially and plays with a good physical temperament.

Cons: Steven Jones has balance issues which will lead to him falling off blocks the longer the play is drawn out. He is late off the snap at times and quick interior rushers can win his edges with a good first step up the field. Jones struggles against speed-to-power and will get put back on his heels against defenders who are explosive enough to jolt him and win his chest. He is just an above-average athlete with regard to lateral agility and foot quickness to mirror while at tackle. He projects as a low-level starter at guard but could be a solid backup with positional versatility.
