Javon Foster 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Pros: Javon Foster became the Tigers’ starting left tackle in 2021 and quickly showcased himself as an impact blocker. His power notably stands out where his anchor is firm and he has the functional strength to create displacement in the run game. Foster has heavy and violent hands with outstanding grip strength—when he sets the clamps, it’s game over for his opponent and his hands aren’t easily displaced. Foster has excellent length and knows how to use it. He has ideal temperament and aggression into blocks, demonstrating a finisher’s mentality with how he gets after people. For an aggressive blocker, I’m impressed with how sound he is at playing within himself and not getting over-extended. While he isn’t the most nimble mover, Foster has proven effective with short pulls and connecting with moving targets in space. While he’s only going to be a two-year starter, Foster did start two games at right tackle in 2020, so he has some level of experience on both sides. 

Cons: The most notable issue that I found when studying Javon Foster is his modest foot quickness and inability to quickly redirect, leaving him vulnerable to inside moves. Most of his “losses” in pass protection from my exposures were when rushers pressed vertically before crossing Foster’s face and finding a soft lane through the B-gap. Foster has to work overtime to set up roadblocks up the arc when facing speed off the edge. Foster battles through stiffness in his lower half which shows up when he’s forced to hinge, pivot, and redirect. He may not offer desirable range in the NFL.
