Carter Warren 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background: 

• His cousin Darnell Carter played linebacker at Virginia and cousin Keith Lumpkin played offensive line at Rutgers 
• First Team All-New-Jersey selection in high school 

System: 

• Scheme tendencies: Blended run scheme, spread passing offense
• 2022 projected role: Starting LT

Pros: Carter Warren has terrific coordination as a pass blocker where it’s evident that he trusts his hands to set the clamps and feet to keep him balanced and square. There were very few instances of leverage issues or waist bending from my exposures. Warren is consistent at reaching his set points and Pitt tasked its offensive linemen with frequent true pass sets in 2021. He takes good angles and gets good depth to cut off speed and does well to not open the gate inside or outside for rushers by remaining patient and trusting his technique. He has experience operating on both the left and right side. Warren is a smooth operator that easily changes directions. I like his ability to hinge, pivot, and slide his feet. He is consistent at operating on the move and executing on longer pulls. Warren has good length and he knows how to use it to work rushers beyond the peak of the pocket. He also maximizes it with well-timed and well-placed punches. I love how he shoots his hands and wins with first contact while not allowing his opponent to deploy their rush plan. Warren has improved every year at Pitt and often switched sides during games as Pitt loved to have unbalanced offensive line looks. I love Warren’s hands. His timing and placement is outstanding and he varies his strikes. He perfectly blends patience with aggressiveness and sets the clamps in pass protection. He is committed to hand fits in the run game although there are some issues with his hands getting displaced and defenders getting off his blocks. 

Cons: Carter Warren’s contact balance in the run game can be improved with added functional strength. His temperament in the run game falls short of earning the mauler label. I have no issues with his motor, I just wish he brought more power and nasty to the table in the run game. Warren has a sufficient anchor but I have seen instances where rushers were able to power through angles when they worked to his edges. He fell victim to the bull rush against Wake Forest but I believe that rep had more to do with the timing of his jump set and his feet getting narrow. He would certainly benefit from adding more strength to his core and lower body. Penalties were a bit of an issue for him in 2021 and there were some communication breakdowns on the offensive line with passing off rushers and responding to twists/stunts.
