Owen Pappoe 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Voted as a captain in 2021
  • A five-star recruit; top-rated OLB
  • USA Today All-USA Georgia Defensive Player of the Year

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Mixture of odd and even fronts
  • 2022 projected role: Starting WILL linebacker

Pros: Owen Pappoe is a rangy and athletic linebacker prospect. He entered the program running sub-4.50 in the 40-yard dash. He is a run-and-chase style linebacker. His game is predicated on seeing before making his move. Pappoe has shown the ability to operate as a walk-down ‘backer on the edge to rush the passer. Tight ends will have a difficult time blocking him due to his powerful hands to shock and shed. He has the speed to cover hash to sideline easily. He’s more of a spot dropper in zone coverage.

Cons: Despite being an athletic defender, Owen Pappoe does not consistently play up to his raw ability. He struggles to process information quickly, leading to playing slower than preferred. Eye violations force him to take false steps forward when reading play-action fakes. There are size concerns for him when it comes to playing as an inside ‘backer at the next level. There are also concerns about deconstructing blocks against interior offensive linemen versus the run.
