Dee Winters 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Led TCU in tackles last year (74)
  • Three-year contributor

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Scheme-versatile athleticism
  • 2022 projected role: Starting inside linebacker

Pros: There are a lot of things to like about Dee Winters. The first thing that immediately shows is his athleticism. Winters has the range to run sideline to sideline to make tackles on the ball carrier on run plays. Winters’ athleticism also shows in pass coverage. Winters has athletic traits to cover both running backs and tight ends in one-on-one situations. He also shows the ability to get great depth in his zone drops to disrupt passing lanes. Winters also shows to be good against the run. Winters has good technique that allows him to play through traffic and get to the ball carrier.

Cons: Dee Winters has a lot of plus traits about his game but there is one issue that needs to be fixed. Winters appears to be slightly undersized, which can affect his play at times. When Winters has to play in the box and take on larger offensive linemen, there are times when he struggles to disengage with offensive linemen. This results in Winters being flushed out of the box. Winters is a good inside linebacker that can benefit from two things. The first is possibly being moved to the edges so he doesn’t have to play in as much traffic. Second, getting stronger so that way he can disengage with blockers more easily.
