Darius Muasau 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • First-Team All-Mountain-West (2020,2021)
  • Earned All-Academic (2021)
  • Two-star recruit out of high school

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Mix of odd and even fronts
  • 2022 projected role: Backup MIKE Linebacker in 4-3 scheme

Pros: Darius Muasau is one of the most productive linebackers returning to college football. He is coming off of two consecutive seasons in which he recorded more than 100 tackles and was named to two All-Conference teams. Muasau has above-average size for the position and average athleticism overall. Muasau aligns as the MIKE linebacker and is relied upon to make a ton of plays at the second level. He flashes outstanding instincts and read-and-react ability. He quickly diagnoses run and flows naturally to the football. He has good short-area burst to close on the ball carrier and displays good tackling range with long arms. He is a strong player in the box and shows an ability to stack and shed and utilize the power in his hands to shock ensuing blockers. He is best coming downhill and his relentless and physical playstyle leads to a number of plays being made behind the line of scrimmage. Muasau is a good zone defender with above-average awareness and length. He is a productive blitzer as well, leading his team in sacks in 2021. He rushes with power and urgency which allows him to create a ton of production late in the down.

Cons: For as productive as Darius Muasau has been over the last three years, his pro projection is a bit tamer. Muasau is just an average athlete and will be exposed at the next level by playing against athletes who are much more powerful and dynamic. He lacks foot quickness to play sideline to sideline and backs win with an angle as he can’t get to the cutoff spot. He struggles to tackle in the open field as he is over-aggressive and struggles to come to balance. His lack of athleticism shows in man coverage as well, as tight ends and backs can separate from him with ease.
