Darnell Washington 2023 NFL Draft Scouting Report

Background:

  • Consensus five-star recruit
  • Played in 2020 Under Armour All-America Game

System:

  • Scheme tendencies: Pro Spread
  • 2022 projected role: Starting TE

Pros: Darnell Washington is a physical specimen at the tight end position. His combination of height, weight, and speed make him a difficult player to defend. From a physical standpoint, Washington checks every box to be a quarterback’s best friend. He presents a huge target across the middle of the field to keep the chains moving. He poses a mismatch for defenses due to his size/athleticism combination. Washington can run past linebackers and box out safeties. He is a bona fide red zone threat for defenses to worry about. He’s also a reliable and willing in-line blocker in the running game. He works vertically and as a slice blocker on split-zone actions.

Cons: Darnell Washington’s production has left a lot to be desired, mostly due to the construction of the Bulldogs’ offense and the level of play at quarterback. This is a run-oriented offense that does not desire to throw at high clips. Washington missed the first four games of last season with a pre-season foot injury. Foot injuries can be tricky, so it’s worth keeping an eye on. His blocking pad level is a bit high, which is to be expected at his height. Dropping his hips to drive into his target can increase his effectiveness as a lead perimeter blocker.
