The Las Vegas Raiders experienced a difficult postseason defeat on Saturday afternoon, losing 26-19 to Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. The Raiders rallied back from a 14-point deficit in the second half and put themselves in an excellent position to send the game to overtime in the dying seconds. Quarterback Derek Carr, unfortunately, threw a game-ending interception on 4th-and-goal and the Raiders' season came to an unceremonial close. The Raiders put forth a sloppy performance overall, having committed seven penalties and two turnovers The loss sends the Raiders into an offseason loaded with question marks surrounding the general manager and even quarterback. No decision may take center stage like the one owner Mark Davis must make at the head coaching position, though. Interim coach Rich Bisaccia performed admirably despite being thrust into the limelight rather unexpectedly following the unforeseen resignation of Jon Gruden. Bisaccia rallied the troops in the face of controversy and guided the Raiders to an unlikely postseason berth. Although we have a ton of respect for the job Bisaccia did, Sunday's loss to the Bengals may leave Davis, Mike Mayock, and Co. aiming higher in their search for a permanent head coach. Bisaccia dealt with a plethora of controversies throughout his interim tenure. In addition to the Gruden situation, a pair of 2020 first-round picks were released in Henry Ruggs III and Damon Arnette following their separate involvements in tragic and ill-advised situations. Bisaccia's ability to clinch a playoff spot despite the mounting adversity lends itself favorably to an argument centered around keeping him in place, but Davis is the type of owner that loves to make an offseason splash. Had the Raiders won a playoff game or two, Bisaccia's chances of remaining in place would have increased dramatically. But an early postseason exit will allow and justify Davis’ desire to chase yet another big fish on the head coaching market. Where the Raiders go from here will be plenty worth monitoring. A decision on Bisaccia's fate will indisputably arrive within the days to come, and Davis is an owner largely known for his affinity for the theatrics. Should he set his sights high, attempting to recruit Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh to the Raiders would qualify as a classic Davis-like move. Harbaugh is reportedly interested in returning to the NFL and the Raiders are the type of franchise that could make him a lucrative offer that also involves personnel control. Davis and Mayock undeniably hold Bisaccia in high regard, with the latter referring to him as an "excellent leader of men" upon his promotion. Gruden's early departure from a rather ridiculous, 10-year, $100 million contract ultimately gives Davis a chance to start fresh and usher the franchise into a new, more cutting-edge direction. We expect him to embrace that opportunity with open arms.
