Life in the NFL is hard, as rookies everywhere are finding out after their first taste of action. While in your typical year rookies have the preseason to be phased into the realm of professional football, the rookie class of 2020 has to endure a baptism by fire. We're playing for keeps right out of the gate.
Which rookie performers were able to make the most of the pro action in Week 4? We, along with our partners at Panini, are recognizing the best of the best each week. Here are the offensive Rookies of the Week from each conference for Week 4 of the 2020 NFL season.
AFC OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
QB Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
After two tight losses and a tie, No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow led the Cincinnati Bengals to its first victory of the season on Sunday, defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 33-25. For the game, Burrow completed 25-of-36 passes for 300 yards and became the first rookie in NFL history to throw for 300 or more yards in three consecutive games. Burrow’s efforts helped guide the Bengals to more than 500 yards of total offense and a season-high 35 points.
Despite facing pressure on more than 30% of his dropbacks, Burrow showcased his top-notch poise, accuracy, decision-making, and processing skills that made him the top pick in the draft.
While Los Angeles Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert made this a difficult decision based on his outstanding performance on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Burrow’s effort resulting in a win gave him the nod this week. The 2020 quarterback class has been highly impressive to start the season and hopefully Tua Tagovailoa can join in the fun very soon.
NFC OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
WR Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings
After a relatively quiet first two games of the season where he racked up five receptions for 70 yards, Justin Jefferson has been unstoppable over the last two weeks. Last week against Tennessee, Jefferson caught seven passes for 175 yards and scored his first NFL touchdown. What did he do for an encore in Week 4? He logged his second consecutive 100-yard outing, tallying 103 receiving yards on four receptions.
All four of Jefferson’s catches resulted in first downs for the Minnesota Vikings, who claimed their first victory of the season on Sunday, defeating the Houston Texans by a score of 31-23. Dating back to last week, all 11 of Jefferson’s receptions have been good for a first down and he’s averaging more than 25 yards per reception. On Sunday, 40% of the Vikings passing yards came courtesy of Jefferson.
For the season, Jefferson leads all rookie wide receivers with 348 yards with CeeDee Lamb behind him with 309. Jerry Jeudy has 234 receiving yards and no other rookie receiver has more than 200 yards.
Jefferson may have been the fifth receiver drafted but he’s been the most productive so far.
