What We Hope Thursday’s Hard Knocks Announcement Is

There isn’t a sports league in the world that can build up hype for an announcement like the NFL can. The future of HBO’s Hard Knocks will be revealed during halftime of Thursday night’s primetime game between the New York Giants and Washington Football Team, per Adam Schefter

Announcing an announcement is one of my biggest pet peeves, but I’ll be honest with you... I’m very intrigued to learn what the future holds here.

For 16 seasons and counting, Hard Knocks has provided us with the ultimate peek behind the curtain. The reality sports documentary was truly unique when it first came on the air back in 2001, offering us an up-close-and-personal look at how an NFL team functions throughout training camp.

The series has gifted us countless memories and moments over the years, but the time to switch up the format is NOW.

What do I hope this announcement consists of? Pull up a seat. I’m glad you asked.

Let’s give the show a facelift and make it an in-season program. Instead of following a team around in July and August, let’s put the cameras in their faces and in the locker room for when it really matters—from September to January. Let’s film the series during the trials and tribulations of an NFL season and release it sometime after the Super Bowl and before the combine. There’s a dead period there that would benefit from this programming change. We all know the NFL wants to dominate the headlines year-round and this would help them get closer to achieving world domination.

Amazon Prime’s All or Nothing series has followed this format in the past, and it makes for much more compelling television.

Seeing how a team reacts to a loss is much more intriguing to me than following them around during team stretches in August. Most NFL teams probably wouldn’t be thrilled with this development, but I can’t think of a viewer that wouldn’t be interested in this style of show.

Let’s put the cameras in Jacksonville’s building and see how Urban Meyer reacts to a tough loss. Let’s go to Kansas City and get a peek into how Andy Reid prepares for an upcoming game. That’s the type of content I’m here for, and I know you are too.

Truthfully, the 2021 iteration of Hard Knocks was dull and boring. The Dallas Cowboys added little to the history of the show, and America’s Team may not even be at fault for that. As I thumbed through the five episodes, I just couldn’t help but feel like we’ve been here and done this before, and I know plenty of you shared that sentiment with me. Hard Knocks is starting to feel a little stale, but one simple change can lead them to a better future.

Here’s to a big announcement this Thursday. Scratch that. Let’s hope it’s the right announcement.
