Who Is The NFL Comeback Player Of The Year Favorite?

Everybody loves a good comeback story. That's why we’re paying extra close attention to BetOnline’s recently updated odds for the 2021 “NFL Comeback Player of the Year” award.

With four weeks of the new campaign now officially in the books, the frontrunners for this year’s honor are beginning to take shape.

The current top 10 per the oddsmakers goes as follows:

  • Dak Prescott (-300)
  • Joe Burrow (+500)
  • Sam Darnold (+1400)
  • Jameis Winston (+1400)
  • Derwin James (+2000)
  • Nick Bosa (+2500)
  • Von Miller (+2800)
  • Saquon Barkley (+3300)
  • Carson Wentz (+3300)
  • Odell Beckham Jr. (+3300)

These updated odds are certainly intriguing and feature some top-heavy favorites. It’s heartwarming to see so many players either thriving in new destinations (Darnold) or making their triumphant returns to the field after suffering horrific injuries (James). These three players are especially worth noting.

THE FAVORITE AND MY PICK: DAK PRESCOTT

You’d have an incredibly difficult time convincing myself (or the oddsmakers) to go in a different direction with the current favorite. Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have won three games in a row after dropping their opening contest to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the star quarterback’s return to the field from a gruesome ankle injury suffered in 2020 has a lot to do with that.

Prescott is sporting an astounding 75.19% completion percentage while tossing 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions through four games. Prescott is taking advantage of the plethora of weapons at his disposal both in the passing game and on the ground and has this Cowboys offense scoring an impressive 31.5 points per game. Don’t look now, but the Cowboys look like a team to be feared come playoff time.

DARK HORSE: JOE BURROW

Currently serving as the runner-up to Prescott’s brilliance is another star quarterback who is deserving of every bit of praise in his own right. Burrow and the 3-1 Cincinnati Bengals are one of the best and most exciting storylines the first month of the NFL season has delivered to our doorsteps.

Many questioned Burrow's ability to return to form after suffering a horrific knee injury a year ago. The former No. 1 overall pick has answered those concerns with great success thus far. Burrow is a star in the making that is on the verge of leading the Bengals to greener pastures. Burrow has completed 72.9% of his passes while throwing nine touchdowns in four games.

UNLIKELY: JAMEIS WINSTON

While our first two topics of discussion have focused on impressive signal-callers, our last talking point will discuss a quarterback that is currently failing to live up to the billing. The 2021 New Orleans Saints seem to have a Jekyll and Hyde complex, and part of that inconsistency is showing its face in the form of their starting quarterback.

The Saints are averaging a shockingly disappointing 144 passing yards per contest (only the Chicago Bears are worse at 114.3 per game) while crawling to a mediocre 2-2 record. Much of the Saints' offensive struggles can be attributed to Winston's poor play. Unless things take a drastic turn for the better, Winston is not going to contend for this prestigious award.
