What Are Reasonable Expectations For Jordan Love vs Chiefs?

The Green Bay Packers will meet the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in what has an opportunity to deliver Sunday's most appetizing contest. The Packers will unfortunately be without their star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week.

Rodgers' absence paves the way for his eventual successor, Jordan Love, to make his first career NFL start. It represents a massive opportunity for a sophomore signal-caller that is still largely expected to serve as the Packers' starting quarterback of the future. Although we will unfortunately miss out on the Rodgers-Mahomes showdown, Love's debut adds some extra intrigue to what’s already a must-watch matchup.

As for what we can expect from Love from a statistical point of view, several of the online oddsmakers have placed those expectations right around the 225.5 passing yards mark, with an over/under of 1.5 passing touchdowns. It's worth noting the Chiefs have held just two quarterbacks—Daniel Jones and Taylor Heinicke—under 225 passing yards this season—and Jones missed out by just three (222) yards. Love has the arm talent to surpass these numbers.

It's difficult to envision what Green Bay's offensive game plan will look like. It could be somewhat similar to how they deployed their short-handed personnel in last week's shocking Thursday night victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Matt LaFleur will likely lean heavily on the two-headed monster in the backfield in hopes of tempering the expectations placed on Love's shoulders. The fearsome duo of Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon touched the ball an astounding 38 times a week ago while combining for 188 total yards of offense and a touchdown. They can expect a similar workload this week.

Despite the run-heavy approach that may follow, the Packers will have to score points in abundance in a contest that has the makings of a shootout. Love will be counted upon to make plays with his arm, and the opportunity is ripe for the taking. For an inexperienced quarterback, marking your debut against a struggling secondary represents the ideal scenario. That is what Love will encounter on Sunday when he attempts to get the better of a horrid Chiefs secondary.

Kansas City continues to be all out of sorts defensively, and are allowing opposing quarterbacks to throw the ball to the tune of 269.8 yards per game. A victory over the hopeless New York Giants in Week 8 improved several of their defensive statistics, but this is still a porous defense that is allowing 27.5 points per contest. Love should get every opportunity to electrify the Packers faithful on Sunday.
