Jaylon Robinson: 3 Best Transfer Options

Former UCF wide receiver Jaylon Robinson has been one of the most sought-after prospects in the nation since entering the transfer portal in late April. The Fort Worth, Texas native has taken his time to make a decision, but one is expected to arrive shortly.

News regarding Robinson’s impending transfer traveled quickly, and it’s easy to understand why on the surface. Robinson recorded 322 receiving yards on just 18 receptions in 2021, but his big-play ability was on display while averaging a staggering 17.9 yards per catch. The undersized playmaker appeared in seven games for the Knights.

Injuries unfortunately robbed Robinson of the opportunity to appropriately follow up an impressive redshirt sophomore campaign in 2020 that saw Robinson total 55 receptions for 979 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 10 games. Several high-profile collegiate programs are currently making a strong attempt to secure Robinson’s services. Robinson’s explosive and dynamic abilities could help an explosive offense become even more dangerous.

Robinson has taken several official visits, and his next destination remains a hot topic of discussion. We’ve identified three fits that make sense on the surface.

TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS

Robinson has already visited Knoxville and there are several reasons why the Tennessee Volunteers view themselves as legitimate contenders—the Vols should have an excellent chance to capture Robinson’s commitment. Current Vols Head Coach Josh Heupel initially built a relationship with Robinson throughout a previous multi-year tenure as his head coach at Central Florida. Robinson established himself as a dynamic and skilled wide receiver under the watchful eye of Heupel. Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh also served as Robinson’s OC at UCF throughout his career-best 2020 campaign. A reunion with Heupel and Golesh may be in store.

Should he choose Tennessee, Robinson would join an extremely talented receiver room in Knoxville. The Vols recently added another big-time transfer in Bru McCoy, who was previously dismissed from USC. Tennessee also returns 1,000-yard receiver Cedric Tillman and speedster Jalin Hyatt, who could take another massive step forward in 2022.

Heupel has quickly turned around a Vols program that has struggled in recent seasons. Tennessee had an impressive five players selected during the 2022 NFL Draft. It’s a testament to the work Heupel and staff are doing behind the scenes.

Robinson is entering a crucial 2022 campaign, and reuniting with the brilliant offensive mind of Heupel could allow Robinson to do his eventual pre-draft stock a sizable favor.

OLE MISS REBELS

The presence of Lane Kiffin immediately catapulted Ole Miss onto Robinson’s radar, and why wouldn’t it? Robinson officially visited Ole Miss just two days after announcing his decision to enter the portal.

You’d be hard-pressed to identify a situation that better benefits all parties involved. Kiffin possesses an elite offensive mind and employs a scheme that is extremely friendly for receivers to produce in. Kiffin’s offense has routinely generated explosive plays at each one of his coaching stops. Most recently, Kiffin’s Rebels averaged an astounding 33.7 points per contest in 2021 while receiving NFL-worthy quarterback play from Matt Corral

Unlike Heupel and Tennessee, Robinson doesn’t have a current connection in place at Ole Miss, but the temptation of possibly working alongside Kiffin likely serves as an equalizer in the recruiting department. It doesn’t take long to understand the benefits of operating in Kiffin’s offense, which has had several draftees since Kiffin took charge, including a wide receiver that’s similarly built like Robinson in Elijah Moore. Robinson’s explosive play-ability would make him an ideal fit in Oxford.

TCU HORNED FROGS

A native of Fort Worth, Texas, TCU qualifies as Robinson’s hometown school—and he’s already taken an official visit with the program. Robinson initially rose to prominence at the local All Saints Episcopal High School in Texas where he recorded more than 100 receptions for 1,400-plus yards and 18 touchdowns during an illustrious high school career. Robinson doubled as an elite return man for All Saints Episcopal, totaling more than 800 return yards.

Robinson ultimately decided to depart the state in search of greener pastures, first popping up at Oklahoma in 2018 before quickly pivoting to UCF in 2019. A return to the comforts of his home state could be plenty appetizing as the young receiver continues his journey to reach his full potential.

Expanding beyond his obvious ties to the state of Texas and the TCU program, Robinson is extremely familiar with new Horned Frogs Head Coach Sonny Dykes and wide receivers coach Doug Meacham, who have both attempted to recruit Robinson in past ventures. Hometown cooking could be just what the doctor ordered to get Robinson back on track. Robinson could do a lot of damage in Dykes’ spread offense.
