The holdout is over.

According to multiple reports, the Seattle Seahawks have reached an agreement on a massive contract extension with safety Jamal Adams. Seattle is giving Adams a four-year extension worth up to $72 million with $38 million in guarantees. As expected, the deal makes Adams the highest-paid safety in the league.

It took a lot longer than anyone would have predicted, but any holdups in the deal were always expected to get resolved. The Seahawks all but committed to Adams long-term when they dealt two first-round picks, a third-round pick, and fellow safety Bradley McDougald to the New York Jets in exchange for Adams a little over a year ago.

Adams took his fair share of criticism for his play in 2020, but the truth is that he was quite good for a player getting acclimated to a new destination. Adams came to Seattle with high expectations, coming off an All-Pro season in 2019. Adams’ first-year performance as a Seahawk was largely more of the same as what we came to expect from him in New York. Adams has always done his best work near and around the line of scrimmage, and that continued in 2020 when he set the single-season record for sacks by a defensive back with 9.5. That mark was good enough to lead the entire team in that category. In addition to his record-breaking sack totals, Adams also recorded an impressive 83 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and three passes defended.

Going forward, the Seahawks should expect more of the same from Adams as he continues to get more comfortable with his surroundings. He’s one of the most versatile defensive playmakers in the league. Adams possesses an infectious amount of energy both on and off the field. He’s a tone-setter on defense. Adams’ overall game coupled with his leadership qualities makes him the type of defensive player that his teammates want to rally around.

There’s no denying that it’s a lot of money for a safety, but the Seahawks clearly don’t think so. If they did, that would have been a conversation before trading all that capital for him and indirectly handing him all the power in these contract negotiations.

Rejoice Seahawks fans, Adams is here to stay. We’ll be excited to look back on how this extension worked out a few years from now.
