When it rains, it pours. The New York Giants entered Sunday's Week 13 contest against the surging Miami Dolphins with backup quarterback Mike Glennon under center. Regular starter Daniel Jones is dealing with an unpredictable strained neck injury that held him out of action. A below-average veteran journeyman, Glennon performed in poor but expected fashion. A nine-year veteran that's currently on his sixth professional team, Glennon completed 23-of-44 passes for 187 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception while also taking three sacks. The Giants struggled to move the ball offensively, accumulating just 250 yards of total offense on the day while failing to score a touchdown—they had nine points on three field goals.
Glennon was diagnosed with a concussion at the conclusion of the game and his status for New York's Week 14 showdown with a thriving Los Angeles Chargers team is currently very much in doubt. With Jones' health and availability also hanging in the balance, the Giants could reportedly turn to Jake Fromm, who joined the team as their emergency third quarterback less than a week ago.
A sophomore fifth-round selection out of The University of Georgia, Fromm has spent his professional career as a member of the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. Fromm actually served as the team's designated quarantine quarterback, which means he socially distanced from the team and in actuality, rarely practiced with Buffalo.
It's a stunning turn of events and potentially the opportunity of a lifetime for the former Sugar Bowl champion. Should Fromm indeed earn the start, a Giants fan base that is thirsty for a savior at the quarterback position will certainly follow the contest with a terrific amount of intrigue. However, expectations must be tempered for a 23-year-old quarterback seeing his first in-game professional action for a team he's currently spent less than seven days with.
Interim offensive coordinator and play-caller Freddie Kitchens would likely keep things as simple as possible for Fromm, limiting him to the similar simple, short, and quick reads in the passing game that Fromm thrived with at Georgia. The Giants have struggled to run the ball with great effectiveness this season due to an underperforming offensive line, but head coach Joe Judge would go conservative while trying to establish Saquon Barkley and the run with Fromm under center.
Fromm was a game-manager type quarterback at Georgia, and the Giants would largely ask him for more of the same in Week 14. As a prospect, he was consistently the most accurate within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage. Fromm took excellent care of the football throughout his time at Georgia largely due to an unwillingness to take risks in search of explosive plays. Fromm threw just 18 career interceptions in a healthy three-year collegiate career that spanned 43 games. He's a smart and meticulous signal-caller that leans on his football I.Q. above raw physical traits or pure, natural arm-talent.
There will almost certainly be kinks to iron out on the fly, but watching a 'new' starting quarterback play for a franchise that is desperately searching for the 'right one' to lead them to the promised land always serves as an unknown and enthralling exercise.
