The Indianapolis Colts will meet the Tennessee Titans in Nashville on Sunday for what could be a season-defining game for Frank Reich’s men. The Colts have dropped back-to-back games to start the new year, digging themselves the haunting 0-2 hole in the process, and we know there’s almost no coming back from 0-3.
While we know the magnitude of this upcoming contest, what we don’t know is who will be starting at quarterback for the Colts. Starter Carson Wentz is questionable as he continues to deal with not one but two sprained ankles.
Wentz's chances of playing on Sunday seem to be trending in the wrong direction. Former fourth-round pick Jacob Eason relieved Wentz in the Colts’ Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, and on the surface, would appear to be the obvious candidate to step into the starting job. This situation just took a surprising turn, with practice squad quarterback Brett Hundley allegedly receiving the bulk of the first-team reps at Wednesday’s practice, per Tom Pelissero.
Pelissero went on to state that both Eason and Hundley could play against the Titans on Sunday. This odd situation could force the Titans to prepare for three quarterbacks ahead of Sunday's crucial contest.
This has the looks of a jumbled and confusing situation, but Eason is the signal-caller that gives the Colts the best chance in Sunday's AFC South showdown.
Hundley is a six-year pro that has been in Indianapolis for less than two months. He threw a whopping 12 passes in the preseason compared to Eason's 59 passing attempts in three exhibition games. The Colts clearly preferred Eason throughout training camp, who made the final roster while Hundley had to settle for a spot on the practice squad.
Eason has been operating in Reich's scheme since the Colts drafted him in April of 2020. Offensive coordinator Marcus Brady may be new to the role but did serve as Eason's quarterbacks coach a year ago. Both Reich and Brady are extremely familiar with Eason's strengths and weaknesses as a quarterback and should prove capable of formulating a game plan that tailors to what Eason does well for their offense.
The Colts' 2021 campaign is on the brink of collapse, so they need to approach this decision with extreme caution and care. Rolling out Hundley or a dual-quarterback system with such little preparation would be the wrong decision.
