Do Eagles Now Have A QB Controversy?

The Philadelphia Eagles bounced back from Week 12's disappointing loss to the New York Giants in incredibly impressive fashion on Sunday, defeating the New York Jets 33-18. Philadelphia's offense was led by backup quarterback Gardner Minshew, who earned the start in place of Jalen Hurts, who is dealing with an ankle injury.

Minshew-mania was in full effect, as the former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback completed an astounding 20-of-25 passing attempts for 242 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Minshew took incredible care of the football and was quite accurate, having finished the contest with just five incompletions and an excellent quarterback rating of 133.7. Minshew was at the center of an efficient overall performance, as the Eagles gained more than 400 total yards of offense. The much-needed win sent Philadelphia to 6-7, as they continue to fiercely battle for the final wild-card spot in the NFC, which is currently being occupied by the 6-6 San Francisco 49ers.

The City of Brotherly Love owns one of the league's most passionate and demanding fan bases in all of professional football, and with that comes a crazed media that's starved for success and storylines alike. Minshew's Sunday showing will undoubtedly lead to questions regarding a potential quarterback controversy in Philadelphia. There is no controversy bubbling in Philadelphia and Hurts has earned the right to maintain his job as their starting quarterback.

Head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen have done a fantastic job tailoring their offense to Hurts' unique strengths, and the recipe has begun coming together in beautiful fashion as of late. Newfound success in the running game has been at the heart of Philadelphia's second-half offensive resurgence, but Hurts has made several notable strides as a passer too.

Since Week 7, Hurts has completed at least 64% of his passes on three separate occasions while accounting for 1,350 total yards of offense and eight touchdowns while hurting defenses with both his arm and his legs. Hurts was undeniably poor in Philadelphia's Week 12 loss to the Giants, throwing three interceptions and completing under 50% of his passing attempts, but that performance was the outlier amongst a string of excellent showings.

Philadelphia will now enter a much-needed bye week before taking the field for a crucial contest against their NFC East rival Washington Football Team in Week 15. Hurts will undoubtedly serve as Philadelphia's signal-caller for that game barring a setback. This coming offseason's game of quarterback musical chairs promises to be one filled with drama. Minshew is potentially deserving of an opportunity to start elsewhere. Philadelphia is Hurts' team, and their future success largely hinges on his ability to continue developing.
