Fantasy football really has come a long way, hasn’t it? It seems like everyone has a story about when they first started playing. Some veteran fantasy managers even had to handwrite all the stats each week. Now, the game outside the game has evolved into, well, exactly that.

Melvin Gordon (RB - DEN)

$5,400 @NYG

Look, I get the Javonte Williams hype. He’s a really talented running back who will almost certainly get the Broncos’ RB1 job at some point. But let’s not forget about Gordon, who was last year’s RB14. Reports out of Denver suggest Gordon will be the team’s lead back in Week 1, not Williams. Are the Giants the easiest matchup in the world? No, but Gordon should still be in line for 13-plus carries and three-plus targets, which lines up with his averages last season. Not many running backs in Gordon’s price range can say the same. It also helps that the Broncos relied on Gordon in goal-to-go situations. He ran the ball 66.7% of all his trips inside the 10-yard line, which was the seventh-highest rate in the league. Expect Gordon to retain his value for the first few weeks, including the season-opener.

Chase Edmonds (RB - ARI)

$4,900 @TEN

Edmonds is an interesting choice because the addition of James Conner likely solidifies Edmonds as the team’s pass-catching back. However, Edmonds is also likely to be Arizona’s go-to back on first downs. With Kenyan Drake last season, the Cardinals never felt the need to play Edmonds every down. Adding Conner gives them a short-yardage back, which is something Edmonds has struggled with due to his smaller size. The bulk of his points can come in the air against Tennessee. At a minimum, Edmonds will have a role in the passing game with the potential to finally play more than 50% of the Cardinals’ snaps. Another sweetener: Across every sportsbook I checked, the Cardinals-Titans game had one of the highest implied point totals. In other words, expect a high-scoring game featuring plenty of receptions to go around. Edmonds’ receiving role alone makes him a nice value. Just imagine if he’s treated like a primary back.

J.D. McKissic (RB - WAS)

$4,300 vs. LAC

Do people forget that McKissic was RB17 last year? That’s almost entirely due to his role as Washington’s third-down back. Look no further than my pro-McKissic tweet from June.

So how does that factor in Washington’s matchup against Los Angeles? Unless Ron Rivera promotes Antonio Gibson to McKissic’s role (which he’s totally capable of), McKissic can see double-digit targets again. Washington’s offensive line isn’t the best, and it doesn’t help they’re about to face Joey Bosa and Co. I think this game could end up being a pass-happy affair for Washington, which boosts McKissic’s value. He’s an easy choice for me, especially at this price. For reference, Drake, Sony Michel, and Tevin Coleman all cost the same as McKissic.
