Are the Denver Broncos closing in on a decision regarding who their starting quarterback will be for their Week 1 matchup against the New York Giants? With the regular season kicking off in less than a month, time is quickly starting to run out.
This isn’t lost on head coach Vic Fangio, who recently said “it’s possible” he’ll name a starter after the team’s second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, which is scheduled for this coming Saturday night.
In an ideal world, the Broncos would already know the answer to this crucial question. And while that may be the case internally, there are reasons to believe they have yet to make their minds up. Both Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater looked good in the team’s first preseason game, a 33-6 blowout win over the Minnesota Vikings. Lock, who the team invested a second-round pick in during the 2019 NFL Draft, started the game and finished 5-of-7 for 151 yards with two touchdowns and a passer rating of 153.3. It was a small sample size, but Lock looked more confident and decisive than he did a year ago. Bridgewater, who Denver acquired in a trade with the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a sixth-round pick, was the next man up and laid his own claim to the job by completing 7-of-8 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. To muddy the waters even more, reports out of training camp have been mostly positive on both signal-callers.
So while the situation has yet to sort itself out, and some may consider that a good problem to have, the Broncos would be wise to commit to one or the other with conviction after this weekend’s game against the Seahawks.
It’s the type of decision that needs to be made sooner rather than later. The third and final preseason game shouldn’t bear the weight of an ongoing quarterback battle. With just 15 days separating the preseason finale from the season opener, the entire franchise needs to know who will be under center for the game against the Giants. Offensive linemen need to know which quarterback they’ll be blocking for. Wide receivers need to know who they’ll be catching passes from. Quarterbacks coach Mike Shula and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur need to know who they’ll be preparing to take the majority of the reps in practice leading up to Week 1. And so on and so on.
For the sake of all involved, let’s hope Fangio and Co. gain more clarity on the looming decision in the coming days, and that they feel great about the process that led to their verdict. Broncos Country deserves that.
