David Montgomery Proving He’s One of NFL’s Most Talented RBs

Four weeks of the Chicago Bears’ 2021 season are in the books and it’s time to recognize David Montgomery as one of the NFL’s elite running backs. In Sunday’s victory over the Detroit Lions, Montgomery proved once again that he possesses a blend of traits—burst, power, vision—that have elevated his game into the upper-class of his position.

Montgomery finished the Lions game with 23 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 69 carries for 309 yards (4.5 yards per carry) and three scores. He’s on pace for 1,313 yards this year.

Check out his will and determination on both of his touchdown runs:

Montgomery entered the league as a third-round pick from Iowa State in 2019 and his draft stock was dinged for a perceived lack of explosive ability. His pre-draft testing numbers seemed to support this theory, but he’s proven through two-plus seasons in the pros that his gameday juice is on par with recognized elites like Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook. What makes Montgomery special, though, goes beyond a stopwatch; it’s his will to win every rep. He runs like a guy who knows every carry could be his last, and he makes them count.

Montgomery limped off the field late in Sunday’s win over the Lions, and according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Bears believe he may have dodged a serious knee injury. We’ll know more in the coming days.

For now, let’s recognize the season Montgomery is putting together so far and flush the inaccurate scouting reports away. He isn’t a plotter or ‘just a guy.’ Instead, Montgomery is one of the most talented running backs in the NFL who, with good health and a consistent offensive line in front of him, will challenge for the NFL’s rushing title by season’s end.
