Can David Bell Replace Allen Robinson For Bears?

Purdue wide receiver David Bell has become a consistent second-round target for the Chicago Bears in 2022 NFL mock drafts as of late, and it’s easy to understand why. With the Bears’ need to add more size and physicality to its wide receiver room this offseason, Bell is a logical choice to rank high on the team’s wish list. We’ll get an official measurement on Bell next month at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, but he’s estimated at 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds. He looks every bit that size on film and even though college programs are infamous for being… generous with their listings of player height and weight, Bell should be north of 6-foot and 200 pounds when he steps on the scales in Indianapolis. Compared to Bears wide receiver Darnell Mooney, that’s massive. Mooney measured in at just 5-foot-10 and 176 pounds during his trip to the NFL Scouting Combine. He’s proven through the first two years of his career that his undersized frame isn’t a problem for his production, but Chicago needs more of a power forward opposite him in order to give quarterback Justin Fields a diverse group that’s capable of ‘winning’ regardless of how the defense is playing. Bell’s production at Purdue speaks for itself. He finished the 2021 season with 93 catches for 1,286 yards and six touchdowns. He’s scored 21 touchdowns over the last three seasons and his film is a showcase of after-the-catch ability that combines above-average change-of-direction and tackle-breaking skills. https://twitter.com/mrcrockpot/status/1489999240155836417 What may be even more exciting about Bell’s game are his ball skills. In fact, there are a lot—and I mean, a lot—of similarities between his ability to pluck the ball away from his frame and Allen Robinson, who’s expected to leave Chicago via free agency this March. Bell’s catch radius is exceptional and helps take the pressure off a quarterback’s need to be pinpoint accurate. https://twitter.com/MetricScout/status/1490921352689483778 Replacing Robinson with a prospect whose game is eerily similar but at a steep discount could be a huge win. It’s a major leap of faith to think Bell will acclimate to the pro game quickly enough to make up for some of Robinson’s expected lost production, but if he ends up on a team like the Bears, he’ll have every opportunity to prove he can be that kind of playmaker.  Ironically, Bell is ranked 39th overall on TDN’s current 2022 NFL Draft rankings. The Bears own the 39th pick in the draft. Fate? Perhaps. Bell is TDN’s No. 8 wide receiver in the class; a slotting that usually results in a high-second-round pick. All signs are pointing toward Bell being a very real possibility for the Bears this April. If combined with a quality veteran wide receiver signed in free agency, one of Chicago’s biggest weaknesses can quickly become a strength in just one offseason, with Bell being a huge part of that upgrade.
