BetOnline is constantly updating their futures odds and recently posed a fair question regarding the future of New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman. It certainly isn’t a surprise to see Gettleman’s job security come into question. The Giants have shown little to no improvement during the Gettleman era. Since he was handed over the reins ahead of the 2018 season, the Giants have compiled an embarrassing up-to-date record of 16-38.
Currently sitting at 1-5 and quickly approaching yet another lost season in 2021, Gettleman is quickly running out of time to right the ship in East Rutherford. The Giants were supposed to take a step forward offensively. After all, the majority of their starters on that side of the ball were acquired by Gettleman. From quarterback Daniel Jones, to the oft-injured Saquon Barkley, to the high-priced Kenny Golladay, this was Gettleman’s vision for his team’s offense.
The results have largely been disastrous. Despite all of the resources invested into the offense over the years, the Giants are currently managing a measly 19 points per contest. The drafting of Barkley and Jones were fairly questioned at the time, the former for positional value reasons, and the latter for skill-related purposes. Neither selection has lived up to expectations thus far. While Barkley and Jones continue to serve as the two decisions that are most often analyzed under a microscope, Gettleman's failure to settle a struggling offensive line may be his largest error. It hasn't been for a lack of trying, as Gettleman has routinely acquired high-priced offensive linemen, but often to no avail. These failures are as damning as any.
Gettleman's decisions on the defensive side of the ball haven't fared much better. He's largely failed to secure the services of a true pass-rushing threat throughout his tenure. Leonard Williams is an excellent defensive lineman but lacks the dynamic skill set to impact the pocket on a play-by-play basis. Gettleman's inability to acquire a second difference maker up front has also allowed opposing offensive coordinators to key in on Williams on a weekly basis with success. Rookie second-round pick Azeez Ojulari out of Georgia has flashed the potential to eventually develop into that player, but it's far too early to tell one way or another.
Gettleman has poured ample resources into his vision for the Giants with nothing in the form of positive results. His efforts to turn a storied franchise around have failed. Gettleman should find himself unemployed at the conclusion of the season.
