Philadelphia has secured the long-term services of one of its young stars.

According to multiple reports, the Eagles have reached an agreement on a massive contract extension with tight end Dallas Goedert. Philadelphia is giving Goedert a healthy four-year contract extension worth $57 million with $35 million in guarantees. The shiny new contract makes Goedert one of the top-three highest-paid tight ends on an AAV basis. Goedert was initially scheduled to hit free agency at the conclusion of the 2021 season, but will now remain in the city of Brotherly Love through the 2025 campaign.

General manager Howie Roseman's willingness to complete this extension in-season speaks volumes to the franchise's confidence in Goedert's ability. Goedert was never truly expected to depart Philadelphia, but all parties can especially rest easy now that the distant possibility has been put to rest. The Eagles all but committed to Goedert long-term when they traded away their face-of-the-franchise in fellow tight end Zach Ertz to the Arizona Cardinals in mid-October. They've now brought that hypothetical commitment to life by putting their money where their mouth is.

Goedert has been in rather fine form throughout the 2021 campaign. The former South Dakota State Jackrabbit has recorded 29 receptions and 429 receiving yards in nine appearances and should have every opportunity to surpass his previous career-highs in every receiving metric. Goedert has been especially productive since seeing an increase in usage in the wake of Ertz's departure. Nearly half of his receiving yards (213) have occurred in the four games he's played without Ertz by his side, including two performances in which he topped 70 receiving yards, something he failed to do throughout the first five games of the new season.

Goedert now receives an opportunity to grow alongside starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has taken a large progressive step forward in recent showings. Head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Shane Steichen have seemingly unlocked the full potential of this offense as of late, and the chemistry between Goedert and Hurts should continue to blossom as both young players become more comfortable with their surroundings and respective skill sets. A tight end is often viewed as the quarterback's best friend, and Goedert's ability to serve as a security blanket in the passing game while running excellent routes up the seam should only enhance Hurts' development as a thrower of the football.

A second-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, Goedert’s ability to serve as a mismatch nightmare for opposing defenses is worth every penny.
