The Cowboys have to be absolutely thrilled with the way their 2020 NFL Draft class materialized.

Dallas was the NFL's top underachiever in 2019, which prompted the team to drop the ax on long-tenured coach Jason Garrett. With a new coaching staff in place, headlined by former Packers coach Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys appear primed to make a deep postseason push. And, with what appears to be a strong 2020 class in tow, they may well make some noise late in the upcoming season. This was a strong roster in the heart of a Super Bowl window before the draft; now this is a team that feels ready to take the next step.

Best Pick: CeeDee Lamb

Lamb had terrific value for the Cowboys with at No. 17. He was a top-rated wide receiver in this year's class and my fifth-overall prospect; for Dallas to secure him by staying put and subsequently block its rivals in Philadelphia from gaining his services is a double win. Lamb will pair with Amari Cooper and an upstart Michael Gallup to provide veteran quarterback Dak Prescott with all the targets he'll need for an encore of a strong year in 2019.

Biggest Surprise: Ben DiNucci

When a team’s big surprise is drafting a toolsy small school QB in the seventh round, it has probably had a strong draft. The only reason why this is a surprise is because Dallas presumably likes its backup passer, Cooper Rush, quite a bit. With Clayton Thorson also in the picture, DiNucci will need to make a hell of an impression to get himself locked into Dallas long term.

Day 3 Sleeper: Bradlee Anae

The Cowboys' draft class is loaded with strong players, although some of them do have questions. Of their Day 3 picks, Anae has a nice chance to make an impact. He's not a high-end special team player, but he'll offer Dallas rotational pass rush value thanks to his excellent hand usage and adequate burst off the edge. Anae will not have a large margin for error as a rusher due to his lack of length, but he's polished in winning with counters entering the league and could be a nice supplemental piece.

X-Factor: Trevon Diggs

If Diggs can live up to his potential, the Cowboys are set. There's some variance here, however, and Diggs is far from a finished product. Dallas did well to prioritize some size and length on the outside in its effort to replace Byron Jones — just don't expect similar results any time soon. If Diggs can get their sooner rather than later, that would be a big win for Dallas and turn this class into a slam dunk.

Summary

The Cowboys entered this year's draft as a team with plenty of talent. Their 2020 class is littered with potential early contributors, including the absolute headache of trying to contain Lamb and Cooper while also looking to button-down run fits against Ezekiel Elliott. There's a lot of mismatches to be had for Dallas and McCarthy; the only threat to a smashing success of a class is adjustments in play style for key rookies — Lamb versus non-Big 12 corners, for example — and potential injury. This should be near the top of every ranking of 2020 draft classes.
